TRAFINZ Annual Conference

The Trafinz Annual Conference is New Zealand’s premier forum for representatives from the traffic engineering, road safety and transportation planning community. It is intended to stimulate debate and collaboration amongst peers who are working in the transportation arena with an interest in road safety, sustainability and traffic management.

This will be an ideal opportunity to network, share and learn new ideas across this diverse discipline.

This year the Trafinz Conference will be held in Rotorua from 3/6 September.

"Safety and Efficiency - the challenges of delivering both" The conversation is changing. We are increasingly understanding that it’s not ‘either’ safety ‘or’ efficiency, but ‘both’ safety ‘and’ efficiency that we are challenged to deliver.

  • The High Productivity Motor Vehicle programme has an efficiency focus, but it does not compromise on safety.
  • High speeds are appropriate on our high volume motorways, expressways and Roads of National Significance - infrastructure investment is justified on these parts of the network to ensure they are not only efficient, but also very safe.

These are examples from one end of the spectrum, but how do we achieve both safety and efficiency right across the spectrum?

  • More efficient management of our existing networks requires increased understanding of the trade-offs between modes, even by time of day, on constrained networks, but while also enhancing safety.
  • For much of our network, the investment required to achieve high speeds, while also delivering a Safe System, is not justified from an economic productivity perspective – what does that future look like?

Safety and efficiency – going forward, the challenge is delivering both.
