Regional Road Safety Promotion Programme

The regional road safety promotion programme (RRSPP) annual summary for the 2024-25 year ended has recently been provided to Road Safety Coordinators across the country by NZTA Waka Kotahi.

This inaugural annual summary showcases the great work Road Safety Coordinators have delivered over the last year and demonstrates how the RRSPP helps reinforce road safety messages and educational material developed at a national level.

Over 3700 initiatives were delivered in the 24-25 year, from walking school buses to displays at community events to court-referred programmes for repeat driving
offenders. Total programme spend was $11.6 million. Approximately 60% of the activities focused on key risk factors (restraints, impairment, distraction and speed) and enforcement, and 30% on vulnerable road users. In addition road safety coordinators carried out road safety promotion on topics of local importance using a smaller share of regional programme funds.

Given the diversity in how initiatives are delivered, the summary uses case studies to illustrate how regional road safety promotion is carried out. The following case studies are included in the summary:

  1. 'Better Together' - a collaboration between NZTA, ACC and council road safety promotion to NZ Police enforcement activity to target road safety issues in the regions.

  2. Huihanga whakaaro Changing minds - Far North District Council driver license programme

  3. Framing up the audience - Horizons Regional Council distractions programme

  4. Better choices - Dunedin City Council impairment programme

  5. Community walks safety talk - Auckland Transport pedestrian safety initiative

  6. Stand-out cyclists - Hamilton City Council cycle safety initiative

  7. Safe restraints for the youngest tamariki - Kaipara District Council and Whāngarei District Council initiative

  8. Deeper learning for young drivers - Tauranga City Council Driver licensing, impairment, distraction, restraints, and vehicle safety initiative

  9. Bike riding for all - Christchurch City Council cycle skills initiative

  10. Kickstarting the journey - Waimakariri Kickstarting the journey District Council, Selwyn District Council, Christchurch City Council motorcycling initiative

  11. Yellow highlights for a notable week - Taupō District Council road safety week

  12. Fresh take on the senior years - Road Safety Southland older drivers refresher courses

All initiatives completed in the Programme follow one of the guiding principles set out in New Zealand’s Road Safety Objectives, that road safety is everyone’s responsibility, with road users having a role to play in improving road safety outcomes.
